The rules for casino bonuses in Great Britain changed on 19 January 2026. This guide explains the main changes in plain English. Bonus terms still differ between casinos, so always read the full terms on the casino’s own website.
What is a wagering requirement?
A wagering requirement (also called a playthrough) is the amount you must bet before you can withdraw winnings from a bonus. If you receive a £10 bonus with a 10x requirement, you have to place £100 of bets before those funds can be withdrawn. A lower number is better for you.
The main changes from 19 January 2026
- Wagering capped at 10x. Wagering requirements on bonuses are limited to 10 times the bonus amount. Many offers used to ask for 30x or more.
- No mixed-product bonuses. An offer can only be tied to one type of gambling, for example casino games only. Operators can no longer bundle casino, betting, bingo and lottery into one promotion.
- Terms cannot be changed after you qualify. An operator should not reduce or change a bonus because you met the conditions quickly.
These changes apply to promotions such as bonus money, free bets and free spins.
Online slot stake limits
Separate from bonuses, the Gambling Commission also limits how much you can bet on each spin of an online slot:
The Commission explains the limits on its stake limit guidance page.
What to check in any bonus
- The wagering number. It should be no higher than 10x the bonus.
- Which games count. Slots often count in full, while table games may count for less or not at all.
- Maximum bet while a bonus is active. Going over it can void your winnings.
- Time limit. Bonuses usually expire after a set number of days.
- Withdrawal limits. Some bonuses cap how much you can win and withdraw.
- Payment method exclusions. Some casinos exclude certain payment methods from bonuses.
Bonuses are marketing. They give the casino more of your play. Only gamble with money you can afford to lose, and never chase a bonus.
